idioms with "hit the"

2021年1月20日

Some idioms that use "hit the". Have you heard of them before?

hit the sack, hit the hay = go to bed
I'm pretty tired. I'm going to hit the sack.

hit the books = study
Sorry, I can't watch a movie tonight. I have to hit the books.

hit the road = start driving
We have to hit the road now if we want to get there by noon.
At the end of a party, someone who drove to the party might say, "it's getting late. We better hit the road", meaning "we better leave now" (driving). [Note: you might have learned "we had better". That is correct. "we better" is a casual spoken version of that. The "had" is omitted.]
